Stanwell Tops to Wollongong (NSW)
Oil on Canvas (1200 x 910)
SOLD:$4500 Painting acquired by Wollongong Council 2007
Inspiration:
The artist has profiled a playful perspective of the Northern Suburbs of Wollongong, from Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops, winding down the mountain along Lawrence Hargrave Drive, to Thirroul. The popular scenic drive features historical and iconic landmarks along the way, with a glimpse of Wollongong’s City skyline and famous lighthouses at Flagstaff Point. Further south, Port Kembla Steelworks is just visible in the distance.
The recently opened ‘Anita’s Theatre takes centre stage in Thirroul, now the home for Wollongong’s Symphony Orchestra . . . and to those with an observant eye, the regimented monument of the Return Soldier in Woodward Park breaks free to extend a proud toast to the new Theatre during the Seaside Festival in 2007. Back up at the ‘Tops’ Sir Lawrence breaks out of his stony stand and throws his hands up in the air as he observes those magnificent men in their flying ‘machines’ hanging over - high above - and he sighs . . .
“Why didn’t I think of that”
